Canvas Conversations with Parti Design Studio

Canvas Conversations with Parti Design Studio

Annie Frankfort and Blaine McDermott are the Co-Founders and Principal Designers of Parti Design Studio, an interior design firm in Richmond, Virginia. The two co-founded Parti Designs, which combines experience in healthcare, hospitality, and historic preservation, providing a unique perspective and capability to tackle clients' toughest design challenges with care and confidence.

We asked Virginia-based interior designers Annie Frankfort and Blaine McDermott questions to learn more about their practice, interior design tips & tricks, their habits, and their dreams. Read more below:

Q: Describe your design style in three words.
A: Holistic. Intentional. Personal.

Q:  If you could live with any piece of art from any museum, which would it be?
A: August Rue Daguerre by Joan Mitchell (Phillips Collection), or any Whistler.

Q: What is your most recent go-to paint color?
A: Brinjal and Bancha by Farrow and Ball.

Q: What’s one common design mistake people make, and how can they avoid it?
A: Scale of furniture is the most common issue we see people encountering, especially in older homes with smaller scaled rooms. So many of the bigger stores are proportioned for newer builds and not the rooms of the 1930s and 40s.  If you cannot draw it out to scale, tape it out, cut it out of cardboard, get creative.

Q: Is there a design trend you think will stand the test of time? If so, what is it?
A: We never met a stripe we didn't like! Maybe a plaid too. Something unexpected in your space -- quirky art or a funky antique that brings you joy is a favorite way of ours  -- something that brings juxtaposition and interest.
